Humans can not detect it but dogs find the sound unpleasant. Place the PetSafe Ultrasonic Indoor Bark Control on any flat surface or you hold it in your hand and when your dog or dogs barks within 25 feet of the Bark Control Unit, it releases the sound. At first the dog will be distracted from barking, but it quickly discovers that excessive barking will result in the sound. This will put an end to the excessive barking in most dogs. The Bark Control unit allows for normal dog “talk” by only triggering after successive barking. It requires a 9-volt battery to function (battery not included).
I have two dogs in the house and when the door bell or company comes it is ridiculous the barking they do. I've tried a lot of things,I did not want to hurt them, but I even tried the dog collar. But this is great set it where they can hear it activate and they are quite, and small enough to take along, they do not like drive in mail box and the ladies at the bank drive in window so just take it along, very handy and convenient.
